  2. Ralph Towner is one of the few true giants of the Jazz guitar. His style is completely unique, innovative and beyond categorization, in this respect similar to John McLaughlin. On Anthem, Towner plays only acoustic guitar, without any overdubs. I much prefer this no-fuss guitar-only approach to those albums on which he used synthesizers and overdubs/5(7).

  4. It features finely-honed new compositions among them a dedication to the late Paul Bley (Blue As In Bley) - as well as a pair of tunes (Shard and Rewind) from the songbook of Oregon, and a single standard: Victor Youngs My Foolish Heart, which Towner first came to love in Bill Evanss interpretation.
  5. This album was given a well-deserved boost when ECM reissued it in It's a solo performance with a twist: Towner plays not only string and classical guitars, but also very competent piano. Only "Entry in a Diary" and "Mon Enfant" are unaccompanied guitar solos; the latter, a traditional melody, is also the sole non-original.
  6. Ralph Towner recently turned 60, and his age has only made him more eloquent, more imaginative, more able to cast a spell. Anthem, his new solo guitar record and his 20th title for ECM, is the follow-up to 's solo recital, Ana. It also coincides with ECM's reissue of Diary, Towner's effort, on which he plays both guitar and his first instrument, piano.
